Last weekend’s shooting of a truck by our policemen pointed out again the level of unprofessionalism plaguing Nigeria’s police force. In the guise of chasing criminals, the gun-wielding officers take pleasure in going to the extreme as the first step. Irrespective of the extent of the evil being perpetrated, professional policing places arrest above all other options.
We should have them learn from international standards like the arrest of a sniper in Maryland, USA last year. Despite having killed three people, the policemen made it a priority to arrest him, and which they did. Unfortunately, our policemen don’t seem to know that their approach destroys evidence and intelligence. No surprise we always have recurring crimes. Our police officers need to learn professional conducts and stop this formal jungle justice.
